Why is college so expensive in the US?

Typical private colleges in the US cost about $55,000 per year to attend ($35,000 tuition fees plus $20,000 living expenses). Does the government provide financial aid?  Otherwise, how would people afford it if they didn't get a scholarship from the university or if their parents didn't save for their college?

For those who are not in the US, is college/university expensive in your country?

v1, financial difficulties is a limitationin some way. And when you are a grown-up, the medical costs will also be a concern if you are inflicted with soem chronic problems. Anyway, by hook or by crook, do your necessary education when you're young and half of your problem will be solved.

It pains me to see some people is wasting time when they should be studying hard when they are young. And it will add-on to their financial problems later in the years as they grow up!

Alec, I don't know what you mean by "this post is meaningless". All I did was to provide some reasoning behind high tuition costs.

Also, I looked up some stats and found out over 60% of students receive some sort of financial aid. So it's not entirely restricted to lower income households. I know plenty of friends that receive financial aid and their families are fine in financial status.

i don't know a lot about financial aid in the US, but it seems like the government would pay for the cost of attending college if the family income is low? that's pretty nice because education should not be limited by someone's financial situation.

public universities funded by the state government are less pricey only for the residents of the state. in other words, someone from another state would need to pay the "out-of-state" non-resident tuition, which could make the total cost about the same as going to a private college.

most people choose to go to another state for college because they either get into a better college in another state or they want to get away from parents. lol. the only exception is probably students in california because the state has good public universities and nice weather/beaches.

i think it's expensive for people with middle income cuz they don't get as much financial aids as low-income people. i don't have to pay anything to go to a pretty good college cuz my family has low income.

I don't like the idea of paying for college. If you really think about it education is free, its the degree we're really paying for

true, why should education be so expensive. maybe we should try self-learning. In colleage, we need to do a lot of self-learning anyway...
but ironically we need that cert for us to get recognised.

To answer your Qn, Cliffy,
yes, like England, European Countries, Japan, Australia....it is also relative to the currency exchange rate.

Another thing to add, are they really good after graduating from Overseas colleges? Some are j**ks u know, they thought they know everything after their graduation when they join the workforce. It is pathetic when u see them suffer the knocks and bumps before they can really handle the job. And it goes the same for some who graduated locally, they are kinda like 眼高手低.

But I would have to say that some very bright ones really steals the show!!!

yah, the cost of living is high in US and so everything is expensive.
But the education system is good and it caters for the needs of the industry and business sectors now and so that is why a lot of people in the Asian regions are vying to get into the US colleges. Irregardless of lifestyle changes and or more so for a total lifestyle changes.

Anyway, there are lots of Asian parents here that made sacrifices like selling away their houses and cars just to get their kids over for that good education. But is it worthwhile in the end? Most kids actually don't want to come back here...becos they are so used to the lifestyle there etc or that they have better opportunities and can't see the need to come home.

Oh bother! We are going globalized anyway, so it dosen't matter where we are do we? We are all 1 air-ticket away.

Alec,
Not all colleges are that way. Most state schools are funded by the gov't so their tuition is actually affordable for the parents.

Private schools are expensive 'cause they have to get their money strictly from consumers, which in large part comes from the tuition.
